Mobile World Congress – What is it?
Considered the biggest event in the Mobile Industry, Mobile World Congress(MWC) is where many companies launch their phones to get the biggest exposure. Consider it the “Detroit Auto Show” of the Smartphone world. Companies and people in attendance range from executives of Network Operators like Verizon or AT&T, to Research and Development department engineers showing the latest advances in the global phone market. Updates on the status of Network Speeds, and roadmaps for carrier network rollouts are a common thing to be showcased at the gathering.
Started 30 years ago, in 1987 the first Mobile World Congress, organized by the GSM Association was formed to showcase the latest and greatest in the Phone industry. The GSM Association(Commonly referred to as the GSMA) is a trade body of organizations within the Mobile Phone space. They are also the governing body that oversees the distribution and creation of the IMEI Serial Number for every mobile phone in existence. The Mobile World Congress is used as the platform for Phone Manufacturers to showcase their flagship designs and the bleeding edge of technology. In the past, Samsung has showcased the Galaxy S series of phones, and is where LG is going to unveil the next generation of their LG G Series devices, the LG G6.
Notable unveilings at previous MWC events include Samsung’s best-selling Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, the Galaxy S6 series and the LG G5. This year even Blackberry is expected to unveil a new Android Powered device, as will Sony, Lenovo and many others. With the conference not for a couple of weeks, expectations, hopes and dreams will run wild for what we can expect in this years next crop of flagship Android devices. With Samsung making their own event later, we’ll have to wait just a little bit longer to see what they’ve been working on since the Galaxy Note 7 disaster.
